In Rita F. Pierson's discussion she emphasizes the importance of a strong teacher-student relationship. She says students only learn from people whom they have built trust in. A colleague of hers said "I don't get paid to like the kids, I just gotta teach them" and Pierson was at a loss for words. Pierson later said "well, they don't learn from people they don't like". Pierson then quotes James Comer with "no significant learning will occur without a significant relationship".

Hi Johnny, great post! Honestly, I had the attitude that students learn better from teachers they like. However, that will be in a perfect classroom with perfect students. The reality of teaching is that not every student will like you. In fact, teachers fair better when they are not liked because students will take advantage of nice teachers, especially high school students. Nevertheless, students respect teachers who have a backbone and who are not trying to become that "liked" teacher. Although it may not be politically correct to say, "I don't get paid to like kids, I just gotta teach them", there are elements of truth to that statements. In the end, teachers are not judged by how well liked they are.
